Tap, tap, is this thing still on?
I’m back.
For many years I regularly posted on willmcginnis.com. I was contributing to the open source community, writing about machine learning, software engineering, and Atlanta. At some point the startup I was helping run at the time, Predikto, was acquired by UTC and my world got extremely busy and in some ways chaotic.
I still was working on and thinking about similar things but I forgot one critical thing: I needed to remember to pay for my domains.
So here we are, new domain, many of the same posts.
How did we get it back?
A fun technical sidebar: this blog is built with Hugo and hosted on GitHub Pages. I wanted to make sure I had at least some of the old posts back, but I didn’t care enough to work that hard at it. Luckily in 2025(!) we have things like Cursor.
In Cursor I was able to prompt the agent (using Claude) to regenerate the old posts given a link to the Internet Archive pages from when the site was still up. I’ve done some editing to make sure nothing weird got hallucinated but it looks quite good.
Wait what’s all this new stuff?
So there was no running blog for a couple of years there, but I never stopped writing. You might remember my post on the discipline of creation. With my friend Claude, I’ve populated this with memos, notes and other writings from the past few years, along with some from way back in the Predikto days. I hope you enjoy reading them as I enjoyed revisiting them.
I’m not sure I totally agree with every point I felt important to make back then, but I’m thrilled to have them back.
What’s next?
In honesty, I’m not sure. I’m starting with revitalizing and revisiting the older content with new eyes. I’m also going to start writing more regularly.
Look forward to topics like Atlanta, startups, AI, venture capital and angel investing, and maybe a recipe here and there.
If you’re interested in exploring some of my past work, here are a few highlights:
- Open Source: My journey with category_encoders, from weekend hack to millions of downloads
- Atlanta: Exploring the city’s tech ecosystem and historical sites
- Data Science: Deep dives into categorical variables and data engineering
- Cycling: Adventures with the Georgia Homeless Bike Racer Association
As always: if you’re in town let me know and we can grab a coffee.
