idea.log is now on macOS. Same app, same data, native Mac UI.

What Is idea.log?

For anyone new here: idea.log is a minimalist idea tracker built for developers. Terminal-inspired dark UI, monospace everything, no fluff. You capture an idea, optionally add a first step, tag it, and move on. The whole point is to get the idea out of your head in under ten seconds so you can get back to whatever you were doing.

It’s been on iOS for a while now. The macOS version brings the same experience to your desktop.

What’s Different on Mac

The core functionality is identical, but the layout takes advantage of the extra screen space. Instead of the tab-based navigation on iOS, the Mac app uses a NavigationSplitView with a sidebar. You get your idea list on the left and the detail view on the right, which makes it much faster to scan through ideas and drill into one without losing your place.

Everything else carries over: quick capture, tag management, status tracking (pending, did first step, did it, abandoned), comments, and the stats view.

CloudKit Sync

Both the iOS and macOS versions now sync through CloudKit. Capture an idea on your phone while walking, flesh it out on your Mac later. There’s no account to create, no sign-in flow. If you’re logged into iCloud, it just works.

The sync uses a private CloudKit database, so your ideas never leave your iCloud account. No server of mine ever sees your data.

Why Bother?

Honestly, I built the Mac version because I wanted it. I spend most of my day on a Mac, and reaching for my phone to jot down an idea was just enough friction to lose the thought sometimes. Having idea.log in my dock, a Cmd+Tab away, removed that friction entirely.
